Scrapbooking with Felt and Rub Ons
When you think of felt, does it take you back to your early school
days? Easy to work with and fun to make story pictures with? The same
holds true today! Scrapbooking with felt is fun to use in adding texture
and dimension to your pages. Felt goes back thousands of years. Perhaps
one of the first materials created, its’ origin is thought to be China.
Wherever it originated, the fact is it has a solid position in the world
of scrapping.
There are many different ways to use felt. Collect it in all colors
as sometimes the hue is enough to inspire you to outline your picture
with it, Stitch it or overlay it onto your pages. Add embellishments
such a buttons, tags and, of course, glitter is always welcome! Layer to
add depth, starting with your first piece a bit bigger as the first one
you lay on the page, and then stack the remaining layers. Remember to
work your designs out first by laying them out on your work surface. If
you like what you see, attach to one another and then apply to your
page. Hearts and arrows to smiley faces; anything can be created in
felt.
Rub ons are available in many shapes and sizes. They are easy to use
and some prefer them for their ease and neatness when that is the look
desired. They are sticky on the back and can be applied with an ice
cream stick, leaving no signs of a traditional sticker.
The use of rub ons is quite simple. Cut out the design or letter you
are going to use, leaving the clear protective sheet in place at all
times. Put the rub on in position and rub firmly with your ice cream
stick all over the design being transferred. Slowly lift back the rub on
to be sure of good adherence, and transfer is completed. If not totally
attached, simply lay the part you have peeled back and continue to rub
firmly with your ice cream stick. Rub ons are permanent and it’s not
recommended to try and remove them once in place. So plan your use of
these carefully to deter disappointment. Though it would seem lying the
whole page of a rub on down on the accepting page and only rubbing what
you wish to transfer is easy enough, it’s not. There is a high risk of
transferring bits and pieces of other rub ons as you focus on what you
wish. This, too, is not recommended even for the most advanced scrap
booker.
The many uses of rub ons include creating titles, journaling and
adding a quote. Rub ons can be applied directly to your photo to bring
out the thoughts and feelings the picture has captured visually. Any
surface will accept a rub on and can be mixed and matched with stickers,
embellishment and chipboard to make a unique memory and page. Rub ons
are everywhere from fuzzy to 3 dimensional, and will add character
anytime you wish to use them in your specific design.
