Scrapbooking Tips for Beginners
Entering the world of scrapbooking for the first time can be a bit
intimidating. Once you realize what your purpose is in regards to
scrapbooking it seems to take a life of its own as it creates the
preservation of memories that can be passed down to future generations.
Scrapbooking is an art of its own and a unique expression that will take
on your personality and individuality that will be priceless to those
hands that someday your work will pass to.
Telling your family story through pictures, embellishments and
journaling, helps you mark the important milestones in your family
history. The pictures lost to a shoe box or dusty photo album will come
back to life as you incorporate them into a scrapbook marking that
particular time in your lives. A new baby, a wedding, your honeymoon!
Any moments you have recorded with your camera are scrapbook material.
You do not have to feel particularly artistic to scrapbook, as it may be
the journaling you enjoy but decorating your pages can be very
therapeutic in a way that calms the everyday stresses and puts your
memories into perspective.
Perhaps the most surprising benefit of scrapbooking is the
socialization it has created. Groups of scrap bookers can be found
almost anywhere. Just like an old fashion quilting bee, there are now
groups meeting at church, craft stores and their private homes. Consider
finding a group near you as the inspiration they share, and the
friendships shared are as priceless as the scrapbook themselves!
 To
get started, look at the clothing the kids have outgrown or the lace
that is on your wedding veil to incorporate into your scrapbook. Bits of
clothing are fun and interesting to actually see and touch and bring the
personalization to the page. Your children’s artwork is precious but is
it piling up? If so, why not scrap it and let the artist help in picking
out the decorations to accompany the page. The artist is, of course,
going to sign their work and perhaps lend a thought or two in
journaling. Make it a habit now not to write on the back of your
pictures. The indentation will show through from pressing too hard, and
with the proper pages, it’s not necessary to do this anymore.
Keep your scraps of fabric and card stock. These make wonderful
embellishments with fabric adding to the whimsical, and the greeting
cards of all kinds can represent all sorts of happenings while making
wonderful tags also. The papers you have saved, such as certificates and
newspaper clippings, can be kept and utilized in your memories and that
of family publicity. Souvenirs and keepsakes can be kept in a special
pocket added to pages that protect both the item and the page.
Take care to store your scrap books upright and do not stack them.
Stacking leads to pressure on the pages, and eventually, the photos will
show indentation of pressure. So what are you waiting for? Get started
today!
