The Simple How to of Scrapbooking
Just a few simple tips on page layout, titling, and journaling will
add character and pizzazz to your scrap book pages. Do your enjoy going
through magazines? If so, that is a perfect way of studying page layout!
Grab your favorite magazine and study how article placement such as
pictures and headings. Study how the page is balanced by the information
presented. This is the balance you wish to achieve on your scrapbooking
pages.
If you are combining pages to do a double layout, attach the two
pages together so the flow of the information is not compromised. This
will allow it to better appear continuous instead of looking like 2
pages and 2 different layouts. Sometimes less is more in page layout, so
don’t feel that every page has to be filled to the brim, as it does not.
Let your photos tell the story. Over embellishment can take away from
what’s being conveyed visually. As you gain experience in page layout,
you may wish to matte some of your photos, especially if it’s a shot
that you want to “pop” by framing in a solid color that compliments the
photo. In working with matting, you will begin to see how doubling, or
even tripling, the matte can bring more focus to the picture. Keep your
design in line with the theme of your scrapbook. Don’t be afraid to mix
and match in subtle ways. Consider the edges of your pages and papers.
You can outline these, or “ink” them, to make them pop in a pleasant way
and add definition to each item.
Your titles and how they are centered in your page is important as it
helps bring the page into balance. When using alphabet stickers and
centering them, place the middle letter in position, working outwards
with the rest of your letters left and then right until the title is
complete. Try your text in various positions. Do the horizontal as well
as the vertical. See how the title looks to the side! Get creative with
your fonts. There are so many to choose from. Have fun and remember your
theme. Use the fonts that seem to get the theme across in a fun way. Try
different styles on the same page. Block letters for your title, while
using a more personal, perhaps handwritten style, for your sub titles.
Journaling expresses your emotions about the content on the page by
sharing the details and facts of the moment you are sharing. They come
to life for those that are privileged to read your family’s story. So
put the dates, your thoughts and the little details that you may feel
are only important to you. They make the story real to others. Your
handwriting will be preserved in this special way if you choose to
personalize your journaling like this. If the story is long, you may
wish to use your computer to generate your journaling. Letter stickers
and rub on lettering is popular.
Whatever your favorite way is the right way, so don’t get caught up
in the details. Go with what feels right as you create a family treasure
for future generations.
