Get Unique with Finger Paints and the Colour Wheel
Looking for a quick and interesting way to add depth and interest to
your pages? Consider finger painting! These techniques are simple to
learn and quite fun to work with:
- The blob and swipe is utilized by placing a tiny blob of paint
on your finger and swiping around the edges of your picture or your
page. In the corners, add a heavy coat to create depth and to bring
the item into balance.
- The blob and run is created by putting a blob of paint on your
finger and running your finger back and forth across the patterned
paper to create a background for journaling or a title. Once paint
has dried, handwrite over the top of it or use your stamp over it.

- The blob and rub works great on card stock and textured paper
along with embossed paper and corrugated card. Apply a blob to your
finger, then swipe over your page. This technique gives a rough
finish as the paint will hit or miss the different corners and
textures of the page.
Finger paint is not just limited to your fingers. Use the paint
to decorate wooden embellishments, and dip your rubber or foam
stamps in to create different looks. Create gift cards and use on
fabrics of your choice.
The colour wheel is a beautiful tool to
work with. It demonstrates the colour spectrum and will allow you to
see what compliments and what clashes and what a subtle and
unexpected match up can do for your design. There are 3 ways to
combine colours. Staying within these perimeters will keep you from
going astray or becoming undecided about using color.
Monotone schemes are created by using within a single segment of
the wheel. Work with the light and dark of that specific color range
to create a complimentary contrast. A harmonious scheme is created
by using one color from one segment, and then adding 2 segments on
either side of the wheel. It’s a great way to bring in more colour
but not add boldness to the page. Aqua, green and blue are an
excellent example.
Contrasting schemes are created using colours from opposite sides
of the wheel. This will produce a vibrant effect on your page adding
energy to your overall look. If the colours come on too strong,
going completely opposite of the colour should add subtleness. Blue
and orange is a good example of contrast. Don’t be afraid to
experiment off your pages. Inspiration can be found in working with
the colour wheel. So never underestimate its usefulness.
Colours are simple, and yet express so much. For instance, red is
associated with warmth and passion. It is symbolic of fire and love.
Earthy feelings are expressed in the warm browns and muted tones of
red and yellow. A bright yellow brings out happiness and makes
people feel good and sunny. Green is fresh and prosperity. Blue is
cool and symbolic of water. Dark blue is elegant and sedate. Your
colours will convey an energy to those experiencing them. So be
conscious of this always.
